Fulbright –Nehru fellowships for teachers, lecturers announced

The US-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) has announced various scholarship programmes for teacher exchange, research, post doctoral studies and academic courses. The Fulbright-Nehru and other Fulbright fellowship opportunities are for study, research, teaching and professional development in the US.

Outstanding Indian students, academics, teachers, policy planners, administrators and professionals in all disciplines can apply, an American embassy statement said.The scholarship program offers opportunities for teachers and lecturers to pursue courses in the US.

Some of the scholarships offered for faculty in India include  Fulbright-Nehru Visiting Lecturer Fellowships, Fulbright-Nehru Environmental Leadership Program, Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program and Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program among others.

The application forms are available on USIEF website. The academic/professional qualifications, date of birth, present position, and fellowship category should be mentioned in the request letter. Applicants are also advised to request three referees to send in their recommendations, either on the Reference Report Form or the referee's letterhead (as specified in the Preliminary Application Form).

The recommendations should be sent to the Executive Director, USIEF, 12 Hailey Road, New Delhi 110 001 by the application due date.  In case of employed candidates, the employer's comments in the application form must indicate that leave will be granted for the fellowship.

The India-US bilateral Fulbright agreement has resulted in a significant increase in the number of scholarships awarded each year. USIEF expects to offer approximately 120 Fulbright-Nehru fellowships for Indians in 2012. The Fulbright Program offers grants to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for teaching, advanced research, graduate study and professional development. Since its inception, approximately 300,000 scholars have participated in the Fulbright Program. Over 7,000 Fulbright grants were awarded to U.S. and foreign nationals in the academic year 2008-2009.
